WORLD MAPS
Like Pokémon Peace Squad Infinity, Crystal Freeze provides us with World Maps. Each Episode comes with its own map, which depicts the environment for that Episode. While there's a path that links each stage with one another, you're able to move around the map in a grid format much like you would in a main series Pokémon game. You will not be able to move over things such as gaps or through something such as lava, but you're able to swim through things such as water. In addition, there may be raised or lowered areas of ground (you can drop down to lower areas), moving platforms, and energy cages and barriers (like those found in stages). After clearing an Episode, you'll be able to switch between the Present and Past versions of the Episode's World Map, which will allow you to start in the Past version of a stage from the get-go.
There are also a number of objects to be found on the World Maps. For instance, there are springs that will bounce you to other parts of the map, such as raised areas you can't get to. Also, some characters have things that only they can reach. Characters with a high Speed ranking have raised rails that they can cross, characters with a high Jump ranking are able to glide over gaps, and characters with a high Power ranking have obstacles they can remove. You can change characters at any time when on a World Map (except before clearing the first stage for that Episode, in which you only have access to the initial character).
World Maps have a number of different things on them that you can interact with. Here's the lowdown on each of them:
Stage: These are the stages for the Episode. When selecting a stage, you have options consisting of Normal Play, Jenny Mode (once accessed), Mission Mode (once missions for the stage are unlocked), or Time Trial (after the stage is cleared). The next stage is only accessible once the one before it is cleared. (A path leading to the stage will light up once it's unlocked.)
Boss: This is the main boss for the Episode, which is only accessible once the third stage in the Episode is cleared (once again, a path to the boss will light up).
Item: This is an item that you can collect that will be stored in your inventory to use in stages. If your inventory is full, you can't collect this item. This item can sometimes be a specific Mega Stone. Note that more important items may sometimes be locked in cages.
Challenge: This is a special challenge that you can take part in. In total, there's one challenge for each character in the game, which are distributed evenly among the World Maps. The challenge takes place in an area based on the environment of the map.
Switch: This a switch like those found in stages. If you go to it, you'll activate it, which can do something one of the Episode's stages, such as open up a cage, barrier, or shortcut, remove a cage or barrier on the map, or do something else on the map. Sometimes, a switch must be pressed in order to access a stage.
Enemy: This is a random enemy (human or robotic), which moves around the map constantly. If you bump into the enemy, you'll be taken to an area based on the environment of the map. Here, you'll have to defeat a number of that kind of enemy. If you manage to defeat all the enemies, you'll be given a random item. Sometimes, an enemy will remain stationary and block an item or switch, and you'll have to clear it in order to reach the item or switch.
BOSS BATTLE: Metal Sonic (On the central map upon clearing all Episodes in Episode Set 1)
When fighting Metal Sonic, a remix of the Metal Sonic boss theme from Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 plays. When Metal Sonic's health reaches half, the music switches to a "pinch" version of the same theme.
SECRET EXITS
New to Pokémon Peace Squad: Crystal Freeze is what is called a secret exit, located in each Stage 1 of the game. These happen to be Goal Gates of a different color, meaning that it'll unlock a different stage than usual. If you pass through this, you'll clear the stage despite not having fulfilled the objectives for the stage, and unlock the Stage E for the Episode. Clearing the Stage E in question will let you go to the Stage 3 of the Episode. Note than you can always come back and do the stage normally. Secret exits may have a number of requirements to access, such as only certain characters can reach it, it can only be done in a specific time period, the Enemy Capsule in the stage must be destroyed, or various other means. They also may be difficult to find.
