In addition to basic gameplay, Pokémon Peace Squad also involves a lot of other actions you can do and in many cases must or in order to clear the stage and get past obstacles.
Homing Attack: The technique made famous by those such as Sonic and Shadow. This allows you to home in on enemies and attack them from the air using a spinning kick technique. This action is most used when you need to cross an enemy to get over a gap. You can perform multiple homing attacks in succession, and will need to in a lot of situations. Unlike Sonic and Shadow, however, the range is much smaller, so you’ll need to get closer to them to perform a successful attack.
Grab Obstacle: In some stages, you’ll find objects that you can pick up and move around. Be pressing and holding the Y button when near one of them, you’ll be able to move and use it to your desire. Let go of the Y button to release the obstacle.
Climb: Several stages have fence-like grates that you can jump onto and climb. To grab onto one, simply move the character to have him or her come in contact with the grate. When climbing a grate, use the wristrap to move around the grate. You can also use the B button to punch while on a grate. Sometimes, you’ll reach a flappable gate that you can press A to use to flip over to the other side. To disband from a grate, press X and you’ll drop off. When on a grate, unless such an attack would normally cause you to get knocked back, getting hit by an attack won’t cause you to fall off. One more thing, the speed that a character travels on a grate is equal to their Speed stat, which means characters with a high Speed climb grates faster than those with a low Speed.
Grind: Some stages have rails that you can grind down to gain speed to get past obstacles. While grinding, you can press the X button to do a 360 and gain speed. By pressing left and right on the control pad, you’ll flip to a rail on the other side (if any). Also, when on a rail, you can jump off at any time to disband or land on another rail.
Swimming: There are a few stages where you may need to get wet and dive into a pool of water. When in water, simply use the wristrap to swim on the surface. Using the A button allows you to dive and from there, swim underwater. By holding the A button, you’ll swim further down and when you let go, you’ll swim upward while you move. When underwater, you can press B to punch enemies and Y to grab and let go of obstacles. Another thing about being underwater is that you can still use Pokémon actions against enemies or obstacles. Attacks aren’t affected at all by being underwater (For example, an Electric attack won’t shock you or anything else nearby, an Ice attack won’t freeze you or the surrounding water, a Fire attack won’t be extinguished at all when underwater, a Grass move (even a Solarbeam) won’t dissipate when underwater, a Water move will still function the same underwater.). The speed that a character swims at is equal to their Speed stat, which means characters with a high Speed swim faster than those with a low Speed. Note that you still run on air when underwater. If you start to run out of air, a Sonic-esque drowning sequence will start and you will drown if you don’t surface or get any air before it ends.
Slide: Sometimes, you may reach a wall or another object that requires you to slide under it. When you reach the obstacle, press X to perform a slide that will send you under the obstacle. This slide can also trip up an enemy when used, but not damage them.
Pole Spiral: A few stages have a vertical pole that you’ll be able to spiral up similar to the Speed characters in Sonic Heroes. When next to a pole, press X to grab onto the pole and you’ll start to spiral around it to the top, where you’ll then be flung off of it.
Drive: In addition to going of foot during the game, there are also several vehicles that the character can and will use. These vehicles range from a fast jet-ski to a hover car to a hovercraft and even a space shuttle! Here’s more on the vehicles below. To board a vehicle, use the X Button when near one to enter it. From there, you drive the vehicle by using Control Pad left and right to move the vehicle, R to accelerate, and L to brake.
